TL;DR: Three different engineering approaches are converging to make local AI inference practical: training models with 1-bit weights from scratch (BitNet), compressing trained models to fit smaller hardware (4-bit quantization), and optimizing inference engines for specific chips (MetalRT). Each makes different trade-offs, and the real unlock will come from combining them.
The Premise
Running AI models locally — no cloud, no API calls, no data leaving your device — has been a dream limited by hardware. Serious models needed serious GPUs. In March 2026, three independent developments showed that this barrier is cracking from multiple directions simultaneously.
Path 1: Algorithmic Compression — BitNet 100B
Microsoft Research open-sourced BitNet: a 100-billion-parameter language model that runs on a single CPU.
The core innovation: instead of standard 16-bit floating-point weights, BitNet uses ternary weights (-1, 0, +1), averaging 1.58 bits per parameter. Crucially, this isn’t post-training compression — the model is trained under ternary constraints from the start. This preserves quality far better than compressing a full-precision model after the fact.
The numbers:
- 100B parameters on a single CPU
- 5-7 tokens/second (roughly human reading speed)
- 16-32x memory reduction vs full-precision

The trade-off is speed. 5-7 tok/s is usable for some tasks but not for real-time conversation. What BitNet proves is a principle: 100B-class models no longer require GPUs as a matter of engineering fact.
Path 2: Post-hoc Quantization — PersonaPlex 7B (4-bit)
The more established approach: take a model trained at full precision, then compress the weights to 4-bit integers. This is what most local AI tools use today (llama.cpp, MLX, GGUF format).
PersonaPlex 7B is an end-to-end speech model (audio-in → audio-out, no text intermediate) that runs locally on Apple Silicon via MLX at 4-bit quantization:

The model’s parameter count (and thus its intelligence ceiling) doesn’t change; you’re just storing each parameter less precisely.

BitNet gets you a smarter model at roughly the same memory cost. A 100B BitNet model takes about as much memory as a 4-bit 40B model, but has 2.5x more parameters to work with.
Path 3: Engine Optimization — RCLI & MetalRT
A completely different approach: don’t change the model at all. Instead, build an inference engine so optimized for specific hardware that even small models deliver exceptional user experience.

The trade-off is the intelligence ceiling. These are 0.6B-4B parameter models — far less capable than GPT-4 or Claude. But for a focused use case (voice commands, document Q&A, system control), they’re fast enough and smart enough. The user experience — sub-200ms voice response, no internet required — compensates for the lower intelligence.
Why Apple Silicon Specifically?
Context matters here. In 2019, Apple severed ties with Nvidia and killed CUDA support on macOS. The AI community largely moved to Linux + Nvidia. For years, Mac users were left behind.
MetalRT is a bet that Apple’s own GPU architecture (Metal) can be a competitive AI inference platform. The 550 tok/s number — faster than both llama.cpp and Apple’s own MLX framework — suggests the bet is paying off, at least for small models on M3+ hardware.
The limitation: MetalRT requires M3 or later. M1/M2 users fall back to llama.cpp. And MetalRT itself is proprietary (closed-source), which limits ecosystem adoption.
The Convergence
These three paths aren’t competing — they’re complementary layers of the same stack:

Nobody has shipped the combination yet, but it’s technically feasible: a BitNet model running on a Metal-optimized engine could potentially deliver both high intelligence and high speed on consumer hardware.
What This Means
The hardware barrier to local AI is collapsing. Not from one direction, but from three simultaneously. The question is no longer “can you run AI locally?” but “how smart can local AI get?”
For privacy-sensitive use cases, the answer is already “smart enough.” Document processing, voice assistants, personal RAG, offline coding assistance — these don’t need GPT-4-level intelligence. A well-optimized 4B model at 550 tok/s is a better product than a cloud-based GPT-4 with 500ms latency and a privacy policy you didn’t read.
For complex reasoning, we’re not there yet. Local models at 1-4B parameters can’t match cloud-hosted 100B+ models on hard tasks. BitNet narrows this gap but doesn’t close it. The intelligence ceiling of local AI will continue to rise, but it’s still well below the frontier.
The business model implications are real but slow-moving. Cloud AI revenue won’t collapse overnight. Enterprise customers pay for SLAs, compliance, and ecosystem integration, not just raw inference. But the long-term pressure on API pricing is directional and growing. Every improvement in local inference is one more reason for cost-sensitive or privacy-sensitive workloads to stay on-device.
The infrastructure is arriving. The models are catching up. We’re watching the beginning of a fundamental shift in where AI computation happens — from centralized clouds to distributed devices. It won’t be sudden, but the direction is clear.
